"MANSFIELD -- An 82-year-old woman is in fair condition after falling from a second-story window at Woodlawn Health Care and Rehabilitation on Monday.

The Mansfield Fire Department received a call at 8:27 p.m. after resident Julia Lopar fell out of a second-story window into a garden outside the building.

The extent of her injuries was not released by MedCentral/ Mansfield Hospital.

"We did have an incident where a resident got out of the window by breaking the window mechanism and the safety chain," said Richard Stewart, administrator of Woodlawn Health Care and Rehabilitation. "She was transferred to the hospital for evaluation and treatment and is expected to be discharged and make a full recovery.

"This is an unfortunate incident and the staff will continue to provide high quality care to residents."

Stewart said he wasn't sure why Lopar was at the window in the first place.

"Regulations require the windows be open but there is a limited opening," he said. "We cannot lock the windows. Residents have to have access to fresh air."

In February, the 535 Lexington Ave. facility was reported among 131 nursing homes nationwide with poor inspection records, according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a federal agency.

Stewart said this type of incident was a first in his 10 years of experience.

"We have staffing units as required for nursing services as required by regulations," he said.

According to Stewart, Lopar was fine when staff members checked on her before her fall.

A review of the incident will be handled by the health care facility, Stewart said."
